Origin of the name Laguna Niguel

The name Laguna Niguel is derived from the Spanish word Laguna, meaning lagoon, and the word Nigueli, which was the name of an indian village once located near Aliso Creek. back in 1821 California was Mexican territory and during this period the area was referred to as Rancho Niguel. This area was used as a sheep ranch and in 1842, the Mexican government issued a land grant to Juan Avila, a resident of San Juan Capistrano. After California became a US territory in 1848 Juan Avila was successful in reestablishing his title to the land and remained the owner of Rancho Niguel until 1865. Hence, in 1895 the Rancho Niguel land became part of the Moulton company.

Laguna Niguel Real EstateThen, in 1959 the Laguna Niguel Corporation was established by Cabot, Cabot and Forbes as it became one of the first master-planned communities in California. Land sales began in 1961 in Monarch Bay and also Laguna Terrace subdivisions. Then in 1986 Laguna Niguel residents took the first step toward city had by forming a community services district. Hence, Laguna Niguel finally became the 29th city in Orange County in 1989.
